Rotorua five things to do for free

Rotorua, New Zealand’s adventure heartland has plenty of places to visit where admission is free. Save your holiday dollars for the big things like Kaituna Cascades and enjoy exploring Rotorua’s free attractions.

1. OKERE FALLS TRACK

Relish the chance to walk through native bush and wait for tiny fantails to dart beneath your feet on the Okere Falls track. The well maintained trail has several lookouts over the Kaituna River and its waterfalls.

TIP: Need brunch, a snack then pop into the Okere Falls cafe, its hearty meals will keep you on the road exploring Rotorua For more inspiring places to eat check out Rotorua where to eat, dine and enjoy great views.

2. SULPHUR BAY BOARDWALK

Discover a weird moonscape landscape in Rotorua where even the birds have lost their webbed feet. Rotorua’s secret is Sulphur Bay. A lunar landscape with boiling water venting into the lake and crystallised minerals. The boardwalk is tucked behind the Bath House and park. The information plaques describe the area as the place where modern tourism began. Check out Sulphur Bay boardwalk for details.

3. KEROSENE CREEK

A thousand instagram shots does not detract from the fun of a natural waterfall infused with warm geothermal water. Jump into an authentic Rotorua experience for free. The bush walk is easy and remember to leave only footprints and consider the environment.

4. KUIRAU PARK

Shop for foodie treats at the weekend market, walk a misty steamy boardwalk and soak your feet in the free publicly accessible park. In the heart of the town is a crater lake, pools of boiling mud and plenty of steam. The park has a playground, designated picnic spots with BBQ facilities.

Remember to check out Rotorua romantic places, couples things to do for further inspiration and where to take a great selfie.

5. OHINEMUTU AND ST FAITH’S CHURCH

Explore a living Maori village with its intricately carved meeting house, its cemetery honouring fallen soldiers (buried above ground due to the constant geothermal activity), observe the ornate woven panels of St Faith’s church and the stained glass window of Christ
walking on water.

TIP: You are walking through a resident’s backyards and do not enter private property unless
invited.

MY FAVOURITE EXPERIENCE IN NZ SO FAR. TOOK THE 9AM TOUR TODAY AND ALREADY CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK. THE RAFTING WAS SO MUCH FUN AND THE TOUR GUIDES ARE HILARIOUS. NEVER FELT IN ANY DANGER JUST ENJOYED THE RIDE! WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYBODY. I WENT AS A SOLO TRAVELLER AND IT WAS STILL REALLY ENJOYABLE.

Fantastic outfit. The crew were cheeky as but super professional. We felt safe throughout the entire experience. 11/10 and a big shoutout to Rob for being a GC.
White water rafting at its best. Wonderful guides. A must do when in or around Rotorua. Felt safe, but had the best time.
Great experience! Made me feel safe when I was scared!! You the m san Owen! So glad I did it. It is beautiful!
The guide, Sam, went out of his way to make the trip as fun and exciting as possible. The whole team were friendly and inclusive.
Cole was a really good guide, talked us through everything and had a good laugh. The water was nice, not cold at all. They provide wetsuits, footwear, helmets, life jackets and polo fleeces. Worth the money and would do it again. Recommend going in a group so that you can split the cost of photos.
