Tutea Falls: Inside the World’s Highest Commercially Rafted Waterfall

The roar hits you before you see it. You’re paddling through warm-water canyons, native bush pressing in on both sides, and then the river just stops. Where the horizon line should be, there’s only air.

That’s Tutea Falls. Seven metres of freefall on the Kaituna River at Ōkere Falls, Rotorua. It holds the title of the highest commercially rafted waterfall on earth, and the moment you drop over it, you’ll get exactly why that record hasn’t changed.

Raft going down the highest commercially rafted waterfall in NZ

What You Need To Know:

  • Location: Kaituna River, Ōkere Falls, Rotorua, New Zealand
  • Height: 7 metres (23 feet), the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall
  • Grade: Class V whitewater
  • Full trip: 50 minutes on the water, 14 rapids and drops
  • Who can go: Ages 13+, no experience needed, reasonable fitness required
  • Runs: Year-round, daily departures from Ōkere Falls base

What “Highest Commercially Rafted” Actually Means

You’ll notice the word “commercially” in that record. It matters.

Plenty of waterfalls around the world get kayaked or run by experienced paddlers on private missions. The “commercially rafted” qualifier means something pretty specific: a licensed operator, paying guests on the raft, proper safety certification, and a run that’s been opened to the public. That’s a much harder bar to clear.

The current global list of commercially rafted waterfalls looks like this:

Waterfall Height River Location Grade
Tutea Falls 7m / 23ft Kaituna River NZ Class V
Agers Falls 5.5m / 18ft Bottom Moose River New York, USA Class III
Sweets Falls 4.3m / 14ft Gauley River West Virginia, USA Class V
Husum Falls 3.7m / 12ft White Salmon River Washington, USA Class V
Tunnel Falls 3m / 10ft Upper Colorado River Colorado, USA Class V

Tutea Falls doesn’t just top that list. It leads by nearly 2 metres, with the next on the list not even coming close.

The Kaituna River and Okere Falls: What You’re Dropping Into

The Kaituna River rafting experience is built around a short, absolutely stacked stretch of river carved through volcanic rock just 20 minutes from Rotorua. The Ōkere Falls gorge is influenced by warm lake water, wrapped in ponga ferns and native bush, and packs 14 rapids and three waterfalls into roughly 50 minutes on the water. Basically, no filler.

The run builds, which is part of what makes Ōkere Falls rafting so good. You’ll hit Grade 4 and 5 rapids that get progressively bigger, so by the time Tutea shows up, your team is warmed up, your paddle technique is dialled in, and you’ve got full trust in your guide. Then you hear the roar.

Tutea Falls is a clean, vertical drop. The raft goes nose-first over the lip, and the back end follows in what we call the “yellow submarine.” The whole raft pitches forward, briefly disappears into churning whitewater, then pops back up. Those 2-3 seconds will come up in conversation for years.

The Story Behind the Name

Tutea Falls sits on land with serious Māori history. The name “Ōkere” loosely translates to “the place of drifting,” and the Kaituna, or Ōkere Awa, has been a significant waterway for local iwi for centuries. Ancient pā sites overlook parts of the gorge, and the river features in oral histories of the region.

The principle of kaitiakitanga, guardianship, and responsibility for the natural world isn’t just a buzzword around here. It runs through everything we do on and around this river. You’re not just sending it over a famous waterfall. You’re moving through a living cultural landscape, and that means something. Our eco-tourism kaupapa goes into more detail on how we look after this place for the long haul.

Is It Actually Safe? The Honest Answer

Grade 5 is the second-highest classification in whitewater rafting. Powerful water, complex rapids, and a real physical demand on everyone in the raft. So yeah, this is a serious river. And rafts do flip at Tutea Falls sometimes. That’s just part of Grade 5.

Here’s the thing, though: Kaituna Cascades has been running  Ōkere Falls rafting trips on this river since 1991. Our guides are swift-water-trained, highly experienced, and absolute Gs on the water. Every trip kicks off with a full safety briefing and water training in the calmer sections before anything gnarly. The guide-to-raft ratio is tight, and there’s always a safety kayaker in the mix.

When a raft flips, the crew is on it immediately. You surface, you get to the raft or the bank, and you’re sorted. Most people who flip at Tutea Falls are laughing before they’ve even stopped coughing.

  • Age minimum: 13 years old.
  • Fitness: You need to be able to paddle hard and hold on.
  • Swimming: You need to be comfortable floating in deep water helps. You don’t need to be a strong swimmer.
  • Medical conditions: Flag anything before you book, and our team will sort you out.

Important Note: Reasonable fitness is required. Please know that your safety will be compromised if you’re not honest about your fitness levels.

When to Go

The Kaituna runs year-round, and the vibe shifts with the seasons.

Summer (December-March) brings warmer air temperatures, slightly lower river flows, and bigger crowds. This is the most popular time to go, and great if you’re a bit nervous about the cold. Water temperatures stay comfortable year-round thanks to the large warm lakes feeding the river.

Winter (June-August) means higher flows, faster rapids, and more powerful hydraulics at the bottom of Tutea. The gorge gets quieter, the bush goes vivid green, and the Kaituna River waterfall rafting experience takes on a whole different energy this time of year. Wetsuits are provided no matter when you show up.

If the Kaituna is running too high, we head to the Rangitāiki as our backup. It’s a Grade 4/5 wilderness run, and it’s brilliant in its own right. River conditions are updated on the website before every session, so you’re never left guessing.

FAQs

Is Tutea Falls the tallest waterfall in the world?

No. There are waterfalls hundreds of metres tall around the world. Tutea Falls is the highest commercially rafted waterfall, meaning it’s the tallest drop you can do with a licensed operator. That’s the record, and it’s a solid one.

Do I need experience to raft Tutea Falls?

Nope. The Kaituna is totally doable for first-timers. Your guide handles the technical stuff. You just paddle when you’re told and hold on.

Will the raft flip?

It can. Flips are part of Grade 5 rafting, and the crew handles them well. Most people who flip reckon it’s the best part.

How far is Ōkere Falls from Rotorua?

It is about a 20-minute drive by car, with heaps of free on-site parking.

What is the minimum age?

13 years old.
