Many eager rafters have pressed our professionals at Kaituna Cascades with the question: ‘Can you go rafting in the rain?’ We understand the curiosity, particularly when it comes to such an adrenaline-rushing, high-octane sport. The short answer is yes, you can, and white water rafting is actually one of the best things to do on a rainy day! Let us explain why, below.
1. Rain is good for rafting across rapids!
The rainier it is, the bigger the rapids will be when you take to the water. This is great if you’d like a challenge when it comes to white water rafting, and part of the excitement of rafting is its thrilling unpredictability; you’ll have to navigate the same obstacles whether it’s hot and sunny, or cold and damp.
2. You’ll get wet in the rain or shine
Like we’ve mentioned above, you’re going to get wet when you raft regardless! The rain makes little difference to the enjoyment and fun that this well-loved activity provides, particularly with our experienced guides at Kaituna Cascades. When rafting in the rain, we’ll look after you, and the best attitude to have in rafting is a willingness to cooperate with nature – even in the rain, sleet or hail!
3. We provide you with all the gear you need
At Kaituna Cascades, we only expect our rafters to bring swimwear, shorts and a towel. Especially in heavy rain, we provide all the gear you’ll need to stay as warm and dry as possible, even when the rapids are tough. Protective clothing like wetsuits, fleece tops, wetsuit booties, splash jackets, life jackets, helmets and paddles are all provided by us.
The only time we’d cancel white water rafting is during a flood, and full refunds are given. Where we raft, largely across the Kaituna River, the water flows are always regulated and man-controlled by a dam. At best, the lakes will fill up a tad more than usual!
