In New Zealand, white water rafting is categorised into different classes or grades. These indicate the level of difficulty that you can expect from a specific river rafting trip. These range from Class 1/Grade I to Class 6/Grade VI.
So, if you are planning on booking a white water rafting experience, it is important that you understand the different classes or grades of white water rafting in Rotorua, Tauranga, and Bay of Plenty.
At Kaituna Cascades, we have simplified what you need to know about the different classes—let’s take a look at them below.
Grade I
Grade I routes are ideal for beginners and families with young children, particularly as these river routes only have small waves. Opt for Grade I white water rafting if you have not been rafting before and prefer a calmer route without too much thrill.
Grade II
Grade II routes offer the opportunity for you to begin exploring the actual technical aspects of rafting, with wide channels that allow you to easily navigate your way along the rapids. These types of routes are recommended for beginners who have been rafting before and want to build their confidence.
Grade III
Grade III features irregular waves that can go up to four feet and fast currents, making it perfect for those seeking a bit more excitement when rafting. You’ll need more experience with rafting in order to go on a Grade III rafting trip.
Grade IV
Suggested for experienced rafters, Grade IV routes require adept boat handling and are categorised by their turbulent waters and potentially unavoidable waves. Grade IV rivers, such as the Rangitaiki River, often feature narrow passages.
Grade V
A certain level of stamina and fitness is required for Grade V routes, like our Wairoa River Rafting package or Kaituna River rafting. Grade V routes are known for their rollercoaster-like rapids which requires the appropriate equipment, experience, technical knowledge, and skills to navigate.
Grade VI
Grade VI rivers are the most dangerous and aren’t recommended for inexperienced rafters—risk assessments and safety training will likely be required before you can join a Grade VI route. These rapids are dangerous and often unattempted. They are not commercially rafted due.
