Despite it being mid winter and during torrential rain at times, the water was surprisingly warm, the wetsuit and booties certainly kept me toasty. And as if by a miracle or perhaps abject talent, the trip photographer got some absolutely top notch photos despite torrential downpours at times. The opportunity to jump in mid stream and swim over a small rapid while getting whipped along by the current, to be picked up by our raft as we emerged into the canyon was a definite highlight, only topped by the sheer exhilaration of the waterfall drop. These guys at Kaituna Cascades are top notch. Safety was paramount the whole trip and we never once felt nervous (ok, a little going over the waterfall, sheesh!). Our guide Owen kept us in stitches during the trip. Be prepared for a gentle ribbing folks, if your a wee to sensitive, best stay home - lol. Owen got us right on point for our drop over the waterfall and we were perfectly mid stream as we went over. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!! ps. the photos cost extra but are highly recommended.   It was a sunny but cold winter day when me and a mate decided to do the whitewater rafting on the Kaituna River. I had done the Grade 3-4 Rangitaiki... read more River rafting and he had done the Grade 3 Tongariro River rafting but it was our first time doing the Grade 5 Kaituna River run. Naturally we had some trepidation going into it particularly at the thought of going over the 7 meter drop but the guides were professional and calmly reassured us. Once we were in the water he ran through the etiquette of rowing and what do do as we go over the falls. He also explained what we should do in the event that we end up falling off the raft or the raft flipping as we go over the waterfall. Which was fortunate as our raft tipped us all into the roaring base of Tutea Falls and everyone managed to get back safe into the raft. It was a fun and action packed day, would definitely do again!

  White water rafting at its best. Wonderful guides. A must do when in or around Rotorua. Felt safe, but had the best time.
